Normal red-rumped male

Red-rumped parakeets, (Psephotus haematonotus), although best known as aviary birds, can make endearing pets.  In order to keep them tame and friendly, they must be handled on a daily basis. Some have been taught to step up and a few have been known to talk a bit.

Rumpies (as they are affectionately known) have a great deal of joie de vivre.  They are enthusiastic in everything they do.  They love to play, they love to bathe, they love to eat!

They hail from Australia and are considered to be part of the grass 'keet family.  As such, the majority of their diet should be composed of a quality seed mix, similar to that fed to cockatiels.  However, unlike 'tiels, who are notorious for not eating much but seed, rumpies love a variety of veggies and greens.  Corn, peas, carrots, kale, collard greens, broccoli, spring mix, romaine and broccoli slaw are all well received.  Fatty seeds, such as sunflower, should be limited (unless sprouted.)  A suitably sized pellet can also be offered, but I don't recommend it as a major portion of the diet.

They love swings and hanging toys.  They will also chew on soft wood toys.  For bathing, give them a shallow dish of water and watch the fun begin!

Adult, male rumpies, should never be housed together.  They become very aggressive and will try to kill each other.  Rumpies can also be pugnacious with other species, so care should be taken to keep them separated if you have other birds.

Rumpies are hardy little birds and with proper care and nutrition can live for 15 years or so.
